Gallery: Kraftvaerk Update
Posted by David Greiner on November 14, 2006
This simple, clean email design sent for Denmark based Kraftvaerk caught our attention recently.
While the simple design looks great, today I want to focus on the email's great use of a liquid width layout. At least 90% of the campaigns we deliver every day use a fixed width design, it's by far the most popular design approach in HTML email. While this is the case, I actually think there are more benefits associated with using a liquid approach for email design.
With the introduction of preview panes, the default display area for our emails can range from a few hundred pixels to the entire width of the screen. A fluid design can expand or contract depending on the width of this area and in many cases ensure important content is visible without being hidden off screen. All the content in this design is still viewable with only 290 pixels of horizontal space. Even more impressive, it looks great when viewed full screen with more then 1600 pixels of width.
I'll put the whole fixed vs liquid width on my to-do list for a future post. I think it's something we'll start seeing more of moving forward and an approach I personally encourage you guys to check out.

Wow, this fluid layout does work remarkably well. I think they're on to something here.
