Windows Live Mail drops a little more CSS support

Posted by David Greiner on June 4, 2007

Windows Live MailAs part of a check up on our updated guide to CSS support we released around 6 weeks ago, I've just done a quick re-test in some of the major web-based email clients to make sure the results are still spot on.

Well, my first test in and I spotted some discrepancies. Turns out Windows Live Mail's recently noted decline continues with the e:link, e:active and e:hover CSS selectors no longer being supported. These changes make it much harder to style any links in your email, and because they can only be declared through the selector, can't be solved by going the inline CSS route.

We've updated the original article to reflect these changes, as well as the PDF summary, which you can re-download below:

We'll keep checking each environment on a regular basis to stay on top of any minor changes, and if you guys ever spot anything amiss, don't hesitate to let us know.

Liked the old one better. Try print the guide on a b/w printer. Hard to tell the difference between working and not.

Red/green does not come out well on a printer. The old one with check / cross was much better.

+1 on a B&W friendly PDF

Colorblind friendly too, though there probably aren't too many colorblind folk out there building HTML newsletters...

We didn't think so, either, but one of our web developers is actually red/green colorblind. He's an invaluable input in our design/development process and has helped us understand a key component of design accessibility. There are a lot of people with deficiencies to certain colors out there.

Thanks for the great feedback on the printing and color blind issues guys. We'll put together a friendlier version today and post it in a few hours. I'll update the post the moment this has been done.

Sorry for the delay in getting the new file up guys. A customer has been hard at work updating the document and adding plenty of new and interesting data, which I'll be posting for everyone in the next couple of days.

Thank goodness. Maybe one day my inbox will contain only email, and my webpage viewing will be confined to webpages once again, and I won't have to spend hours turning on all the "render email as plain text, regardless of what the message wants to do, because I actually own this computer" options every time I set up a new computer.

Got anything to add?
