New Zealand’s new anti-spam legislation
Published September 03, 2007 by Mathew Patterson
On September 5th, New Zealand's Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007 comes into effect. For Campaign Monitor customers, this should have little impact, because it is essentially just requiring that New Zealand businesses have direct permission to email people, and always provide an unsubscribe link.
Our permission policies already extend beyond that, so you won't need to do things differently, even if you are from New Zealand.
However, it is another piece of ammunition for you to use when discussing permission with your clients, to show the growing international agreement on the importance of respecting peoples email addresses and right to control what arrives in it.
Mark Brownlow has a good collection of anti-spam laws around the world, helpful if you need to check for a specific countries legislation. Don't forget though that just complying with the relevant laws is not enough anymore. You have to ensure your emails are relevant too, or risk being blocked and filtered in the same way spam is.

Nice to know you are keeping in touch with matters across the ditch (and elsewhere).
We are continually impressed with the comprehensive nature of looking after clients interests, whether it be with ensuring usability, to ensuring legal compliance, that the Freshview crowd provide.

Have you also considered how this may impact tell a friend functionality? Is there an issue there do you think?

Thanks for the comment David.
Since we don’t store the names or addresses of people that are forwarded to, the Campaign Monitor account owner has no access to those addresses anyway. That means this new legislation has no impact in that area.

Be interesting to know if you saw much of a spike of activity over the past few days - I certainly have received a fair number of “last chance” emails in the past week.

We’ve definitely seen a few permission refresher campaigns going out, as people make sure they can easily show that they are permission based.
