Email and the Future of Web Design
Posted by Mathew Patterson on November 16, 2007
Over on the Freshview blog I've just posted the slides and outline of my talk from the Future of Web Design last week in New York city. It focused on the lack of love for HTML email, where that has left us, and what the future holds.
Around 500 people attended, including quite a few of you guys, and it was great to say 'Hi' in person! In case you've ended up here after hearing my talk, I'll link to the resources I mentioned:
- The Email Standards Project — signup to be notified at the full launch
- 2007 CSS support in email chart
- HTML email design and spam testing tool
Check out the full 'Future of Email Design' slides and outline and if you have any follow up questions or feedback for me, I'd love to hear it.

Hi Mathew,
Although I do agree with you on the fact that the subject is your 'entrance' to our clients' inbox, I think the format of the emails should not be 'marked' as plain-text-only. Some of my clients prefer HTML, and other companies may agree with me, like:

I think it depends on the market you're trying to 'invade'.

Thanks William,
I think if you listen to the audio, now available at the Future of Web Design site, you will see I am not saying all email should be plain text.
Just that the text copy component of an HTML page is vitally important.
