Who do you design for?

Posted by Mathew Patterson on August 4, 2008

Do you build websites for hot new bands, or international movies stars? Are you part of the team at a renowned design agency? You might be....but probably not. The great mass of web designers don't fit the stereotypical mold.

I personally come from a number of inhouse design roles, for 'web' companies and non web companies. The disconnect between the kinds of design that is talked about at conferences, and what I was actually doing was the reason I started Designers Inhouse, the list for inhouse web designers to keep in touch with others in the same position.

Following the same line of thought is Cameron Moll, who is going to speaking on the topic of inhouse design at An Event Apart Chicago. This is a great sign that the industry is broadening its focus to encompass more of what web designers are doing.

We'd love to know all the various places you guys and girls are doing web design and using Campaign Monitor, so here's a quick poll for you to let us know:

It will be really interesting to see what the results are. If you've still got your question-answerin' pants on, don't forget to fill out the A List Apart Web Design Survey, which is the biggest of its kind and a truly valuable source of information.

If you'd like to continue the discussion about what makes a web designer, or you are a web designer in a really unique company, just leave us a comment!

Two answers from me really... Am an inhouse designer for a retail company, but only work there 4 days a week and the rest of the time do some freelance work on the side

9-5 for a non-profit organization and contract work for my own clientele on the side.

Interesting. The majority so far run their own companies.

Got anything to add?
