We were instant fans of this predominantly text-based email newsletter from the Manchester Digital Development Agency.
Right off the bat they clearly explain why the recipient is receiving this email (always a good idea) and give them the opportunity to remove themselves if they’re no longer interested.
The opening paragraph sets expectations about how often they will receive the newsletter and provides quick links to the main stories covered in that issue.
As per our recent design recommendations, the email looks great with images disabled and also makes good use of alt text to improve the chances of images being turned on.

We learnt a few lessons from making and sending this newsletter that I thought others would like to know about.
First, triple check for typos. There’s a few in this newsletter that we didn’t spot until after it had been sent. Fortunately, none of them are very bad, but its still a bit embarrasing. I’d recommend roping in some colleagues to check the text before you send. (Or maybe having a “spot the typo” competition in the next newsletter!)
Second, some of our subscribers are on corporate networks that use very aggresive email filtering, so all they can see is the text of the email. We designed the email using sematic markup to deal with this. If the CSS layout or images cannot be seen, at least the subscribers will still get to read the important stuff - the text!

MDDA are certainly producing some excellent work. I have worked with them on several projects for Manchester Libraries and their approach is always professional and clearly thought out. The newsletter that they have now produced clearly demonstrates their commitment to standards and their continuing growth as a first-class web development organisation. Well done.
