Our Forward to a Friend and Preference Center pages get a refresh

We've completely reworked the pages your subscribers see when they forward on your email campaigns, or change their preferences. Now, they look just as elegant as your newsletters do, on any device.

The finishing touches have been applied to our new-look Preference Center and Forward to a Friend pages, ready to view via both new and existing email campaigns. If you've previously customized these pages, you'll find your logos and branding have been seamlessly carried over - you don't have to do anything in your account. But that's not all you can expect from this complete redesign.

A more friendly Forward to a Friend page

If you remember how this page used to look, you may agree that it was high time it got an update. To double the good news, we didn't do things half-heartedly. After looking at how this page was being used, it was clear that most people forwarded campaigns to a single person only. So we compressed the form down to one recipient (with the option of adding up to another five), making the form much quicker to fill in and far less daunting. There's also an image of your newsletter, as a nice reminder of what the subscriber is passing on to their friends:

Updated Forward to a Friend page

As part of this overall simplification, some of the more fiddly customization like the font or button colour are no longer available when customizing this page in your account. However, you can you can change the page background colour and add your own logo as before.

A Preference Center that you'll prefer

Like the Forward to a Friend page, we've cleaned up the Preference Center, to ensure the form is more intuitive to use and less error-prone. Your logo and colors can still be added to make this tidy design really yours:

Updated Preference Center

Made for mobile screens

Forward to a Friend on mobile screensIt's no secret that an increasing number of people are reading - and sharing - email campaigns on their mobile devices. So as part of this update, we've also optimized both the Preference Center and Forward to a Friend pages for mobile devices. Here's the same Forward to a Friend page as the one we showed earlier, now tightened up and slimmed down for small screens (click to see a larger version). With luck, you'll see an uptick in shares as a result!

You'll see these changes now when you view your email campaigns, or visit the 'Client Settings' tab in your account. A huge thanks to everyone who nudged us gently for a refresh - as always, we'd love to hear what you think of these pages' new look.

These look great, with our increased focus on responsive templates this will work out much better :-)

There seems to be an error when you go to unsubscribe and changed your mind and want to re-subscribe. It doesn’t work.

Forget my previous post :) It works great.

How do you set the text on the headline above “Please use the form below…” text?

It seems to be showing “_client name_ Email Preference Center”, which we don’t want there at all - the graphic contains this information, AND we don’t wan the client name showing anywhere on the page as we have multiple lists on the one client so it needs to be really generic (ideally list specific so each list can have it’s own header graphic).

And what’s with the “Unsubscribe from all _client name_ emails” about? Our lists are set up to unsubscribe per list (due to them being separate lists for separate websites) so people shouldn’t be unsubscribing from all of the emails on that client, just that one list’s emails…

Hi Simon, it isn’t possible to remove the “_client name_ Email Preference Center” heading at present - for one, we feel it’s fairly important to have the sender’s name prominent, to prompt subscribers as to who they’re communicating with. I’m happy to add your vote internally to be able to edit this text, to possibly make it a bit more generic.

As for the preference center, it’s good practice to allow subscribers to unsubscribe from all emails from a given sender, should they want to. For one, it reduces the possibility of spam complaints.

Both the heading and ability to unsubscribe from all emails were available in the previous preference center - apart from a visual update, we haven’t changed up these things at all.

OK, but I’m sure the old Preference Centre didn’t have the heading if you used an image - I replaced the name and title with the image, which was generic across all of our lists.

It also doesn’t match what you’ve got in the preview image on this post.

As for the unsubscribe, it always looked like it was just that one list rather than all lists on the old one. I think it should follow the settings that have been set in the control panel per list, and not over-ride it with some unwanted “all lists” unsubscribe. For that matter, each list should be able to customise the look and feel of the page (why else would you be able to see a preview via the drop down menu at the top of the Preview window?)

    Thanks!

Hi Simon, yes, you’re correct - the text heading is a new thing. Happy to note down your feedback in regards to removing this, unsubscribing and customizing the page per list - we’re certainly all for a more customizable experience. If we make any progress on these things, we’ll be sure to let you know :)

Hey there. Is there any legislation or requirements we need to keep in mind with using a ‘forward to a friend’. Do we just infer from what we know of our friend that they are interested? And is the sender’s email secure with this system?

How about the ability to sort the fields that appear in the Preference Center? As it stood, the **only** way to rearrange the order was to first delete the all custom fields (and all their associated data). That’s just crazy. Then we have to recreate the same custom fields in the order we want. Then we have to reimport our list with the previous custom data values.

Is there anything being done to address this?

Hey Heidi, a lot of what is recommended or required by various countries has been built into our Forward to a Friend functionality. For example, UK guidelines suggest that we make the identity of the sender clear and do not save addresses. This is something we’ve done from the start, plus we’ve provided sharers with the opportunity to add additional details, should they feel they need to further identify themselves to the sender, or justify the forward.

As for the sender’s details being ‘secure’, I’m not sure what you mean by this one. We do ensure that all forwarded emails feature the sender’s name and email address and as mentioned earlier, we don’t store the email addresses that the email is being forwarded to. Let us know if you have any questions about this :)

HC - Thanks for your feedback here, rearranging custom fields is something we certainly should look into, so I’ll keep you updated if we have any news on this. I’ll give this a bump internally and keep you posted - sorry for the trouble!

Hi, good to see these updates but I would have thought adding the ability to reorganise the list is key above most other things.

    Looks great, really :)

I wish you could have redesigned the FB app subscribe.
And notification window for web when someone fails to properly field. Or to give us the opportunity to change the background image for example.

I wish you much success in their future works.

When will we be able to change the button color? This would be an elegant option for us being able to truly customize these pages to fit our brand.

Akaša, thanks for your suggestion! We’ll certainly look at making the FB app customizable in a future update - sorry that it isn’t as flexible as you would have liked.

Matthew - Good call, it’s one for us to look into! We’ll keep you posted if we make it possible to change colors of elements on the page, thanks for the great feeback :D

The lack of customization capability and inability to insert into our own web pages, edit label copy, etc is surprisingly poor, given CM typical performance and capabilities in other areas. I expected better from CM.

Hi David, we’re really sorry for disappointing you, but are glad you took the time to let us know what you’d like to see in the app. We really wanted to keep things simple for now and then see that was in demand from customers like yourself. Nothing is set in stone, so being able the edit the page is something that we’ll happily consider for a future update. As always, we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop and let you know if it’s something we work on here.

One more vote for the following:
    1) Preference Center per list not per client
    2) Customization of the title
    3) Manually re-order the form fields

    OR

Custom preference Center form to copy-paste to your own website. Just like Unsubscribe form.

Hi Olli, these are all great requests - thank you! I’ve added your votes internally, so we’ll be sure to let you know if any of these get worked on in a future update. :D

    Hi,
I am deciding which mail automation program to use. What I need to achieve is to send out an email to all of our customers that will contain a promotional offer for our products/services to entice sign ups. We will ask our current/past customers to forward and distribute the mailout to their friends in return for being included in draw for a valuable prize (or who gets most sign ups). We therefore need to send UNIQUE mail or weblink to our customers in order to see who of their friends reacted to that promotional offer (they may just write their name with email under the email/website that was sent to our customers) to determine who they were referred by. In nutshel: Our customers will get promotional offer to be forwarded to their friends and we need to see how many people that signed up were refered by our current/past customers. (we than pick customer with most signed up referrals).
Does your program allow for this or is there a solution to achieve this under FORWARD TO FRIEND function?
    Thank you,
