Reselling done right: How Selectmailer grew to 80+ clients
Selectmailer is the poster child for using Campaign Monitor to add an additional revenue stream to your design business. By cross-selling email marketing to their clients they've managed to dramatically increase sales and keep their customers happy at the same time.
What made you decide to resell Campaign Monitor as Selectmailer?
"Our clients loved Campaign Monitor so much that we decided to look at offering it as a service"
We were in the middle of building a similar system for our clients and were trawling the internet looking for ideas when we came across Campaign Monitor. It took us about 5 minutes to realise that what you already had was way better than what we were developing.
After swearing loudly our own development was halted and we started to introduce our clients to Campaign Monitor. Our clients loved it so much that we decided to look at offering it as a service to anyone who needed a brilliant email newsletter service, and so Selectmailer was born.

How do you pitch email marketing to your clients?

In all honesty it fits in perfectly with our core service of web development. Virtually all our clients have a need to inform customers by email from time to time. The real challenge was how to encourage new customers who had never heard of Selectmailer.
We used pay per click for a while then realized our greatest form of advertising were our customers newsletters. We added a footer to all new templates with a link to Selectmailer.
We encourage all our customers to use email marketing responsibly and carefully. There is no point bombarding recipients with email as they will either unsubscribe or mark the messages as spam, defeating the whole purpose of contacting them.
Targeted emails work so much better, a case in point is a Selectmailer customer who sells womens clothing with a mailing list of nearly 70,000 users. Rather than send offers to everyone they segment the list into dress sizes and word the emails specifically at that target audience. The results have been outstanding.
How has Campaign Monitor helped your business?
We now have three core services. Webselect for web development, Selectbrochure for online page turning brochures and, of course, Selectmailer. Each service compliments the other and our main web site is currently being redeveloped to focus on the three services.
When a new customer looks at Selectbrochure we also introduce them to SelectMailer and vice versa. This has increased sales dramatically.
Has it been difficult getting clients up and running with email marketing?

Customers tend to already know they need email marketing, the trick has been to ensure they do it right and not get caught up with buying in mailing lists. We still find that customers hate getting spam but don’t consider sending it quite as bad. So we tend to try and educate our customers as to why doing it ‘the right way’ is best in the long run.
Once we are sure the customer will be using good lists the rest is so simple. The Campaign Monitor interface is so slick and simple to use we rarely have to provide any support at all. Customers just understand it straight away.
