Q&A Newsletter
Designed by Newism
Designed by Newism, the same guys who implemented this very website, the Q&A newsletter is clean and well structured, with a feeling of space despite the full load of content. Q&A is a show that “puts punters, pollies and pundits together in the studio to thrash out the hot issues of the week”.
Take a look at the prominent contents listing, and also the nicely integrated date header in the content column.

Voices
Designed by Chris Johnson from UNC Design Services
Voices is doing something a little unique here which we thought was definitely worth sharing. Instead of making their newsletter a lengthy novel that people would likely just skim, they’ve created an “introduction” version with a link to the full newsletter for all the details. This link takes you straight to their full campaign which can be read like a regular website.
A unique idea that can be a great tool for those of you trying to squeeze too much content into each issue. Give your subscribers the basics, and let them dive into the full details if they’re interested.

Paternoster Chop House
Designed by Matt Powell from Made Up Design
A lovely two-column newsletter done up in gentle shades of grey. The header catches the eye with a bold image. The rest of the newsletter is nicely laid out to show the nightly specials for each day of the week, making for a nicely scannable newsletter.
This is more than just a good looking email, they have all the right stuff, including a permission reminder complete with unsubscribe message at the very top of the email, although it is a bit hard to read on the textured background.

SXSW Announcements
Designed by SXSW
As designers we were so excited to see SXSW come on board as a customer late last year. Their interactive arm is the premier web design event for the year and something the Campaign Monitor team will be hitting come March. SXSW have been doing an awesome job keeping attendees and subscribers informed about the festival as it all comes together, with special event announcements and informative monthly updates on what's happening. We especially loved this January film announcement sent a couple of days back.
They get all the basics right - permission reminder and link to web version in the header, quick links on the right so subscribers can easily scan the content, clear unsubscribe and forward to a friend links in the sidebar. Most importantly, the newsletter is filled with relevant, timely content for their subscribers and loads of links back to the SXSW site where people can learn more.
The best part, this is a beautifully customized version of one of our free email templates so they are guaranteed good results in all the popular email clients.

Nyman Ink
Designed by Nyman Ink
This fresh, clean newsletter showcases a lovely use of colour. We especially love how the the two-tone treatment of the logo is echoed in the bolded words in the body of the email. The original graphic also stays within the two-tone colour palette and is relevant to the content of the letter in a playful way.
We just love the content of this newsletter, too. An informal request for knitted squares for a charitable donation is certainly a unique call to action and one we’re not likely to see pop up too often. It’s also refreshing to see obvious links to unsubscribe in both the header and the footer; anyone wanting to unsubscribe won’t have to go searching for the link.

Outpost
Designed by David Kaneda
This short and sweet announcement shows how effective email can be for marketing. Outpost is a new iPhone application that integrates with Basecamp to let you manage your projects while mobile.
The three different color bands separate the key information nicely, and the phone image make nice big click target, an excellent example of an image that adds more than visual interest. If you use Basecamp and have an iPhone, definitely check out Outpost.

Dialogue from Dialect
Designed by Dialect
Using just black and white, this newsletter from the new web marketing agency Dialect packs a lot of impact. The short heading is very large, and is in actual text rather than an image, which is great to see.
We also enjoyed the personality shown by including the photos at the bottom. It’s worth noting that one half of Dialect is Alex Dunae, who we’ve mentioned before for his premailer script.

LIttle Nudge
Designed by Dynamite Partners
A bright and colorful newsletter from Nudge London is an excellent example of a design that works well with or without images. The rounded corners and gradients add a touch of design completeness to the layout, but even without them the newsletter maintains visual readability and impact.
The big, clear contact details on the bottom of the email are also a nice touch, and very different from the typical 8px grey text we are used to in footers. Excellent work!

FontShop Industry Focus
Designed by FontShop
The team at FontShop create newsletters that every designer should be interested in. From a design perspective, the newsletters are very strong, using a clear structure and strong contrast to make them highly scannable and appealing.
FontShop are also making excellent use of information they hold on their subscribers to send tailored emails on specific topics to segments of their lists. This example is aimed at the book industry. The very top of the email even makes mention that the content in the newsletters is not yet even available on the website. That’s a great way to encourage people to sign up.

Threadless Holiday Sale
Designed by skinnyCorp
Threadless are the perennial over achievers of the email newsletter world. They pump out a newsletter every week with all the new shirts designs (plenty of which end up in the Campaign Monitor offices) and are always worth a read.
This entry showcases their most recent design for the newsletter, for their annual holiday sales. The design is quite image heavy, but in context those images are the most important part of the design. We love the 'free shipping' callout right at the top, and also the 3 key buttons to $5, $10 and $15 shirts. Clear benefit, and obvious action points.
There's a lot of different shirts on offer, but the design is easily browsable, and judging by how quickly they sell out, the newsletter is working.
