News & Events That Shape the Dr. P. Phillips Orlando Performing Arts Center

From the DPAC Team

Welcome to the first edition of DPAC's quarterly newsletter, Sightlines, created to keep you apprised of happenings with the DPAC project and team.

Our primary goal is to keep you informed of the steps we are taking to meet our grand opening date of 2012. We appreciate your interest and support through the multiple milestones which have taken place already and those to come!

To say the least 2007 was a monumental period of growth and realization. The project is alive and well with the financing approved, primary design team in place, and land secured. In 2008 we will take even more giant steps in the realization of the theaters interior and exterior designs, fundraising efforts and marketing initiatives for Orlando's premiere performing arts venue. We are also progressing in developing our brand identity with the anticipated schematic design launch later summer. We are excited to have you journey with us toward a magnificent cultural and educational venue for Central Florida.

Technology Summit and Greater Orlando Arts Groups

DPAC hosted the first round of several important community programs, including a technology summit to discuss technological advancements to feature in the new facility and forums for Greater Orlando arts groups and resident companies to discuss what factors are most important to the potential end-users of the center.

Technology summit participants included local experts leading the industry in the field of innovation. Input from these experts has provided critical insight into the developing plans to proactively pursue technological advancements that will impact the way performing arts centers function and operate. Through these advancements, DPAC will lead the industry as a world-class arts center and transform the performing arts experience.

Representatives from local and regional arts groups met with the DPAC team to engage in extensive dialogue about the new facility from the vantage point of the producer and the performer. Discussion topics ranged from affordability to design particulars. Many representatives later commented on how useful this experience was for them in understanding the scope of the facility and being able to have input into the new center components.

According to DPAC President Kathy Ramsberger, "We are strongly committed to listening to our community and engaging the expertise of local resources as we continue to develop this innovative, 21st Century arts center destination."

DPAC's Design Team

On November 6, 2007, DPAC announced the selection of the initial Design Team at a community gathering at the Beardall Senior Center in downtown Orlando. Selected through a public procurement process were Theatre Projects Consultants for theater planning, Artec Consultants for acoustical design, and Donnell Consultants Inc., for theater costing. They join design architect Barton Myers Associates and development partner Hines who were procured in 2005. The event provided the opportunity for the community to hear from and ask questions of these world-renowned experts in theater architecture, planning and acoustics.

"These firms have been involved with some of the greatest halls in the world and what they've done with them really exceeds the expectations of both the artists and the audiences," said DPAC Chairman Jim Pugh.

On January 15, 2008, the Orlando City Council approved contracts for production architects HKS in association with Baker Barrios. The team will manage the entire design and construction process.

In an effort to support DPAC's business objective to utilize minority and women-owned companies in the design and construction phases of the project, as well as for other long-term business opportunities, the Orlando City Council also approved a contract for M/WBE consulting for Anderson & Associates, PA.

"These teams will provide crucial elements which are integral to shaping the design and mission of the arts center based on their extensive background and qualifications," stated Pugh.

HKS Architects is a leading multi-disciplinary architecture firm. Its Orlando office is the largest regional office, led by Matt Clear, AIA. Notable projects include Orlando City Hall, CNL Towers I and II, and Disney's Wide World of Sports. Their performing arts facility experience includes Bass Performance Hall in Ft. Worth and the Smith Center for Performing Arts in Las Vegas.

Carlos Barrios Baker Barrios Architects, a local firm, provides a scope of services for clients that includes architecture, master planning, pre-design services and interior design. Principals Tim Baker, AIA, and Carlos Barrios, AIA, have developed many local projects, including The Plaza, the new OUC building, UCF Recreation Center and NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Anderson & Associates, P.A. is an Orlando based firm which provides national consulting services in assessments, technical assistance and implementation of Minority/Women Business Enterprise and related programs. President Veronica Anderson is committed to ensuring community involvement and business development within the arts center project.
