Hot on the heels of our recent improvements to how you import and test your campaigns, we just launched another handy new feature in the Create/Send process. You can now update your campaign HTML and CSS directly in the browser, and its already proving to be a huge time saver.

The old process of having to back to your HTML editor, save the changes, upload the file and then test again has been dramatically improved.

With a single click you can bring up the raw source of your email campaign. We pull all your HTML and CSS into a single, clean document even if your original campaign was spread across multiple files when you imported it. We’ve also added color coding to your source so it’s easy to scan through the document and find the section you’d like to tweak. Even if you’ve opted for us to move your CSS inline, we’ll still show you the original expanded version so it’s easy to update. We’ll move everything back inline for you once you’ve made your changes.

When you combine this new feature with the recent update allowing you to send a quick email preview after import, you have a very simple workflow for making quick updates and previewing them in an email client. Making multiple tweaks to your campaign has never been so easy.

Of course, you can still re-import the complete campaign if you’d like. But, if you want to make quick changes and see the results instantly, this feature is a huge time saver. Because of the changes we needed to make to the importing process, this feature isn’t available for any of your older drafts, but will appear for any campaigns you import from now on. We hope you like it.

100% Choc full of win, with time saving sprinkles.

  • david

Excellent – will make life simpler for sure. Tweak tweak tweak.

  • Morning Copy

Yes! This will def speed up troubleshooting.

  • Joe Shooner

    Oh, this is awesome.

  • Terry

    Great news and a definite time-saver !

  • Adam Fitzgerald

I had to do about 20 css revisions to a third party template the other day, and it just would not sit right. Had me pulling my hair out. This is a fantastic addition guys!

  • Wayde Christie

Great feature guys, but I’m really hoping this can be toggled on a per-client basis!

  • David Greiner

Thanks for all the great feedback guys, it’s brilliant to see such a positive reaction.

@Wayde, this particular feature is available for any campaigns imported via the web or uploaded from your machine, not for email templates you’ve set up for clients. They’ll still be restricted to working within the content boundaries you define when building each template.

  • John D.

    AWESOME! Great addition!

  • Fabian D

    Just keeps getting better…

  • George

I can’t count how many times I’ve needed this. Brilliant.

  • Tim Griffin

Superb. Thanks for making this a feature that I will certainly take advantage of!

  • Jim Gay

    Finally. Great new feature, thanks!

  • Lee R

Sorry, how the heck to you get to the step to do this? I can’t seem to find it anywhere.

  • Tim Olthof

    Wicked, thanks!

  • David Greiner

Hi Lee, once you’ve imported your campaign and you go back to make any future changes, the “Edit my HTML” tab will be visible and you can make any of your tweaks there.

  • Christina

Thank you so much for this!

  • Rick Vugteveen

This is a fantastic improvement! My only worry is seeing what changed between versions and being able to revert. Any chance that version control will be built into a future release? https://gist.github.com/ has a good model to follow.

  • David Greiner

Thanks Rick. We’re focused on keeping this as simple as possible right now. We plan on keeping a close eye on how customers use this, and if it looks like some kind of “revert” feature would be a big help we’d consider it. until then, we’ll focus on keeping it nice and lean.

Of course, if you did make a big change you want to undo, you can always revert back to the originally imported version. This feature is really all about quick, fast tweaks.

  • Damien Buckley

This could well be one of the best new features CM have introduced in a long time – this is going to save me so much time. Thanks fellas.

  • huiadesign

    WOW that is fantastic, thankyou!

  • Chris Mackie

Great feature! Will it be available for Templates too?
Would save a heap of time for template updates/amends.

  • Paul McDowall

You guys do rock. As Chris said above this was also available when you import a new template this would be a huge timesaver.

  • Ed Henderson

    My only concern would be:

    1. Import campaign
    2. Spent afternoon making tweaks
    3. Come in next day, forget and reupload, overwriting changes.

Could we have a reminder on upload that if you had made tweaks, they will be lost?

    Apart from that, superb

  • David Greiner

Some great suggestions in there guys.

Chris and Paul: Right now this functionality isn’t available for templates. By nature, campaigns are imported much more often which is why we focused on them first. Of course, we know this would be just as handy when you do import templates, so it’s something we’ll be considering.

Ed: That’s a good call. We do offer that when you tweak the auto-text content and then try and re-import, so it’s definitely something to consider. Right now we’ll wait and see if this is something that people experience, and we’ll go from there.

  • Jon M

Looks like another great improvement – thanks!

I’d love to see template editing too please :-)

  • Dave Slade

This service just keeps getting better and better. Amazing. Thank you guys – keep up the good work!

    That’s a great new feature.

  • Nathan Pitman

Would be nice to see an export option too (or did I miss it) so that once done I could backup the finished source to my local machine. :)

  • mick

nice one! will be a lot quicker

  • Andy Mathers

Rock and roll…thank you so much!

  • David

  • Joanna

    THANK YOU!!!!

  • Carissa

Oh! This is so nice, I really appreciate this feature.

  • Becky at Love Eco

    Grand! Thank you.

  • Mary

Very nice! I think this will help CM sales too as honestly the lack of this feature was almost a deal breaker for me when comparing to other eblast programs. I agree with the suggestion for an export option as stated by Nathan.

  • Ian Eisenberg

Hi, thank you very much. good job.

    Ian Eisenberg

  • John

Well, what if we don’t want the client to be able to edit the HTML templates?

  • Mathew Patterson

@John The templates are not editable, only the single HTML campaigns imported from a file or URL

  • Kurt

  • Greg Burkett

I would like to buy your dev team a tall frosty Coca-Cola for this one. Thank you so much!

  • Andi

Finally!!! This is definitely a HUGE time saver for sure.

  • Sol

    Nice one fellas

  • Kerri

This is a great improvement! And right when I’m starting on my first campign with CM! Thanks!

In case your tallying requests, count me in as another individual who would love to see this feature in the Template creation are as well!

  • Letitia

Awesome improvement! Can’t wait to use it! :)

  • James

Used this yesterday and it rocks! Huge timesaver.
    +1 for an export option

  • Simon

Wow, oh my yes. Already saved me time with my clients and their persistent last minute mind-changing! Of course I’ll still be billing them for the time it previously took…that’ll learn ’em for not thinking it out properly in the first place.

  • Samuel

  • SAndhya

    This really helps a lot………….

  • Anup Zaver

This has WINNER written all over it! It’s going to save me tonnes of time!

  • Dan Whitmore

Wonderful addition to an excellent system!

  • DJ Lein

Damn, you guys are smart! Thanks! :)

  • Dries Van haver

    Nice one

  • Dries Van haver

Nice one. Cause testing creating zips , uploading , sending again it’s a time consuming proces.

  • Tom Bathgate

This is such a great feature and goes to prove that Campaign Monitor is a fantastic piece of kit for the job in hand. Will save me a lot of time and effort!

Just wish you could have multiple logins for an account, but I’m sure that will come with time!

    Keep up the good work!

  • Alx Block

Really really awesome. You guys are just the best.

  • Meredith Self

    Great feature! Love it!

Just have to remember to copy it in the end and paste updates/modify the online version, too.

Will there be a way to come back to campaign and get html after sent?

  • rio lecatompessy

    Awesome feature.

  • SL

I wasn’t able to find this new feature in my campaign set up.

  • Mathew Patterson

@SL the option will only show when you try to edit a campaign where you have already imported HTML from a file or URL.

  • Email Newsletters – New Zealan

Why not add an “update here” button in “Current Templates” area next to the links “Update, delete or export template”. This seems an intuative place to edit the template. Don’t you think?

  • Gus Davies

Thank you! This was typically one of those things that always bothered me, but I just got used to. The way you handle your customers is absolutely fantastic and it’s exciting to see a product that I love become better and better.

I handle the campaigns for our marketing team and it absolutely killed me when multiple changes were made. It really feels like you understand the pressures of a Digital Media Assistant! I can only feed back glowingly to friends and colleagues when it comes to the service you provide.

I wish you continued success in the future.

  • Nickolas Simard

Now, this is GREAT! Thank you!

  • EricaB

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  • Bemmu

Wow, I requested this feature recently and now it’s there. Amazing!

  • Spud

Overdue but welcome. Hilarious in light of ‘it will never happen, Campaign Monitor is for designers’ feedback I received last year when solicited for comments and I said only thing lacking was HTML tweakability…

  • Mathew Patterson

@Spud While we probably did not actually say “it will never happen”, we do always record feedback, and make decisions based on what we think will help the most people at that time.

Sometimes features which for various reasons did not make sense before and now do – this is why we don’t pre-announce any plans at Campaign Monitor. We prefer to remain flexible and respond to changing conditions.

  • RZN8 Media

Really want to see the templates import process do this too. I spend SOOOO much time making small tweaks to perfect a template and check in email browsers each iteration takes more time out of my day and more money out of my pocket.. I use templates exclusively.. guess I just hate wasting time…

  • Ros Hodgekiss

Hi RZN8 Media and others, we certainly are tallying your feedback when it comes to extending this to the template import process as well. Naturally it may not get added to the app overnight, but we’ll certainly keep you posted.

Thank you everyone, for all your props and feature requests – it’s brilliant to get so many reactions when we let these updates loose in the wild :)

  • Andy Walton

    A to the WESOME!

  • Marc

    Great addition!

Would love to see this added for templates, as well as the ability to duplicate an existing template via web.

So often, we’ve done a template for a client, and then 2 months later, they want just a small change. Would be fantastic to do this via the CampaignMonitor interface

  • Kris

Fantastic! I had been waiting for this for long!

  • Karen Rainsong

Thank goodness! This is going to save me so much time I can’t even tell you!
    Wonderful- keep it coming!!!

  • Squidge Man

Great feature guys, no sooner did I see this post that I used the feature! Cheers!

  • Patrice L.

Awesome. This will be especially handy when I’m on the road and don’t have access to an html editor but need to send messages out.

  • Wimmmmm

Apparently it does not provide this feature when using a template; I’d like to tune my template right now inline, since CampaignMonitor renders it differently than my normal browser…

    Why not for templates?

  • Ros Hodgekiss

Hi Wimmm, as mentioned earlier, we’re certainly looking into how we can make it easier to edit templates too. Stay tuned to this blog for news on future updates. :)

  • Mikey Leung

Whew, about time. This was a big difference between yourselves and competition.

  • Sam Evans

I am going to wear my Campaign Monitor T-shirt all day tomorrow in honor of this great acheivement. Genius. Well done guys!

  • John

Sweet as a nut! You guys are too good.

  • justin

    looooooooooooooooooooooooong overdue

  • Leon Poole

    Awesome update guys

+1 for seeing easier online editing to templates tho!!

  • Kurt Ritta

This saves a ton of time. Thanks!

  • JP

Fantastic more features will def help speed things. thanks guys.

  • Darren Shrager

    Hell yeah! THANK YOU!
