When we launched Campaign Monitor back in 2004 we made a very deliberate decision to keep our pricing as simple and transparent as possible. The idea of a small delivery fee and one cent per recipient was a new and unique approach that made it easy for you and your clients to know exactly how much an email campaign would cost.
Almost six years later to the day and we haven’t changed our prices once. But while our pricing model hasn’t changed, the way many of you manage your email marketing has. The old batch and blast approach of sending a single campaign to your entire list is slowly being replaced with smaller, targeted campaigns based on your subscriber’s interests. This is a good thing.
In a world of priority inboxes, there’s no doubt that more targeted and relevant campaigns produce better results for you and your subscribers. The problem is, our $5 delivery for each of these smaller campaigns can quickly add up. The last thing we want is for our pricing to discourage you guys from following best practice. So with this in mind, I’m very excited to announce our new monthly pricing plans.
Pay monthly to send unlimited campaigns and autoresponders
Anyone sending at least one campaign a month is going to love our new monthly prices. Basically, for each client you have in your account you pay a low monthly fee based on your number of subscribers. This monthly fee will then adjust automatically as your list grows or shrinks. Here’s the pricing for up to 50,000 subscribers:
|Subscribers||0 – 500||501 – 2,500||2,501 – 5,000||5,001 – 10,000||10,001 – 25,000||25,001 – 50,000|
All clients with 50,000 or less subscribers can send an unlimited number of email campaigns and autoresponders each month for these low monthly rates. For those with bigger lists, we have some nice high volume discounts and very generous monthly send limits.
Choose the pricing model that suits each of your clients
With the addition of monthly pricing, we’ve got you and your clients covered no matter how you like to send. To keep pricing as flexible as possible, you can choose how you’d like to pay on a per-client basis. Pay monthly for those that send frequently, and stick with pay-as-you-go for those that don’t.
When adding a new client or updating an existing one, you can choose which approach works for you, and easily switch between them at any time.
Set your own marked-up monthly prices
This one is a big deal for anyone reselling Campaign Monitor. In a couple of clicks you can set your own monthly prices for each client and automatically earn a profit every month. Here’s how it looks in your account:
The old pay-as-you-go approach meant you only got paid when a client decided to send, making your mark-up income difficult to predict. The introduction of monthly pricing means you can set a monthly rate for each client and rest assured that passive income will arrive in your account each and every month.
No nasty tricks or surprises
We’ve put a lot of thought and elbow grease into taking out any surprises for you and your clients when it comes to monthly pricing. A good example is what happens when you move up and down pricing tiers as your lists grow.
Let’s say some time during the month your list grows from 2,400 subscribers up to say, 2,700 subscribers. This would move you out of the $35/month plan and up to the $60/month plan. Instead of just bumping you up automatically and charging you a higher rate for the remainder of the month, we’ll give the option of paying the additional fee only if you try and send another campaign in that period. This gives you or your clients the chance to hold off paying extra fees for the remainder of the month if that campaign isn’t urgent. It also means nobody gets a shock when they get their next monthly bill.
If you’re interested, we put together a bit of an FAQ covering common questions you might have about the ins-and-outs of how monthly billing works.
A motivation to try new things
Now that the send limit barrier has been removed for frequent senders, we’re really looking forward to seeing you all try a few things with your campaigns. If you haven’t already, it might be time to start segmenting your subscribers based on their interests or past campaign behaviour. Combine this with a dab of A/B testing and some targeted (and now free) autoresponders and your subscribers will thank you for it.
That’s right, autoresponders are included in the monthly plans
To remove the price barrier even further, we’ve also included unlimited autoresponders in every monthly plan. We’ve already seen a number of customers set up ongoing campaigns for everything from motivational fitness messages to week-on-week design competitions, so this change will offer great value to senders of recurring or longer-lasting autoresponders. If anything, it’s taken the price tag off being a little creative, so we can’t wait to see what kind of applications you come up with.
I also wanted to say a big thanks to everyone for their patience as we put this new pricing system together. It was a long time coming, and I personally know lots of customers that have stuck by us while this was in the works, even if it meant paying higher prices in the mean time. That really means a lot, and I genuinely hope these changes help make your email marketing programs more creative, effective and profitable.
