About 12 months ago, we launched a brand new drag-and-drop email builder to help our customers create high-performing email campaigns.

Since then, we’ve been focused on using your feedback to make it even better. We added enhanced font and color options, streamlined logo alignment & sizing and added new capabilities to insert dynamic content into your emails without writing a line of code.

Following on from that, we’re excited to share another significant addition to the email builder – a new template library with a new set of email templates you can use to create high-performing campaigns.

Why add new templates?

The drag-and-drop email builder is at the heart of the product so we’re constantly looking for ways to improve.

Since we launched the email builder a year ago, feedback and data from our customers about how they use the builder has poured in. Here are some of the trends we noticed:

  • We needed even more template designs – Even though you can create your own layouts and designs with the builder, we found that people often already have an idea of what they want their campaign to look like. When they don’t see a template that resembles that idea, many assumed it wasn’t possible to design with the builder.
  • We needed a streamlined campaign creation process – We also noticed a few areas where we could simplify the campaign creation process. For example, after talking to our users, we found that they frequently use the same template for campaigns with similar content. Although you could choose to edit and resend an existing campaign, there was an opportunity to make it easy to start from the last email with content that was already sent rather than starting from scratch.

So with this feedback in mind, we set out to add a new template library and simplify the process of creating and sending a campaign.

The new template and campaign creation process

We rallied our team to build these new features and get them into your hands as soon as possible. Here are a few updates to the product we’d like to share.

New templates

Our team of designers have designed more than 25 new email templates you can use as a starting point to create your own unique, beautiful email campaigns.

The new templates span 5 key types of campaigns a marketer like you might want to send, including:

  • Announcements – Templates for sending beautiful, branded announcements about new product launches, partnerships and customer stories, company milestones, etc.
  • Newsletters – Templates with various layouts and styles that help you send amazing email newsletters to your audience.
  • Deals & offers – Highly optimized templates for sending marketing promotions that drive sales for your business.
  • Feedback – Friendly templates that are perfect for gathering feedback on your product, service, event, content and more.
  • Events – Impactful templates you can use to announce your upcoming event and drive registration.

Simplified Campaign Creation Process

We’ve also made some changes to the campaign creation process.

When you click ‘Create a Campaign’ anywhere in the app, you’ll first be taken to the ‘Campaign Details’ page like normal.

Once you enter the details of your campaign, like campaign name & subject line, you’ll then arrive at the new ‘Choose a Template’ screen.

previously sent email campaigns

If you’ve sent a campaign through Campaign Monitor before, those emails will appear in the ‘Previously Sent’ area.

If you want to send another campaign using the same design as a previously-sent campaign, you simply select the campaign, edit it in the builder and send away.

If on the other hand, you want to use a new template for your campaign, you can choose from any of the newly-designed templates, by selecting one of the categories under the ‘Create New’ section.

Featured email templates

Finally, if you want to use an existing template, you’ll see it under the ‘My Templates’ section, Or if you want to import an HTML template or simply send a plain-text email, those options are there as well.

Email content to help you get started

One of the new changes you’ll notice is that once you select a template to start from, the example content carries through into the builder.

So rather than starting from scratch, you now have a baseline design and copy that you can replace or build on. This makes it even quicker and easier to create high-converting email campaigns that get results for your business.

When will I see these new changes in my account?

We think these new changes are going to make it even easier for busy marketers like you to create high-performing campaigns, and we’re super excited to get them into your hands.

We’ve started to roll out these changes over a few weeks to make sure everything goes to plan and there is no interruption to your email marketing plans, so you should be seeing them land in your account very soon!

Who can I give my feedback and thoughts to?

These changes are a direct result of the feedback you, our awesome customers, have been giving us and we’re keen to hear more about what you think! Feel free to post your thoughts or send us your feedback at support@campaignmonitor.com.

We’re really excited to roll these updates out and are hard at work on the next round of features to help add flexibility to the email builder.

  • Jon Livingston

Can’t wait to try out the new additions!

  • Chelsea

You cannot select a font size & also there are not many font options available

  • Maciej Blazejczyk

    Few projects are amazing!

  • Thomas

One massive problem with your update, when I now want to do a split test and “Copy content from Version A” to make “Version B” this option has been removed. Not user friendly at all.
First complaint I have with Campaign Monitor. I hope you can bring this back this feature this week at the latest or I will be a very annoyed customer.

  • David Greiner

@Thomas – Great catch, you’ll be pleased to know that’s something we caught too and will be shipping a fix in the next 24 or so hours that will make it super easy to just grab the content from Version A. The new experience is also a big improvement on the old one. Thanks for going to the trouble of flagging it.

  • Thomas

@David great to hear you are fixing this soon. I flagged this with your support team as well. Would be great to be kept informed of when this change is deployed.

  • Samuel Clarke

Sounds awesome! Look forward to giving them a spin.

One thing I’d love to see with the email builder is the ability to add custom colours to both H1,2,3 and P content – individually not just across the entire email.

  • David Greiner

@Samuel – Great call, we’re actually working on that and a host of other updates to make the builder a lot more flexible for you. We’ll share the news here in the coming weeks when it’s ready to roll.

  • David Greiner

By the way, if there’s anything else on your nice-to-have list, feel free to add them here. We’re listening.

  • Rhyd

I may sound like a stuck record, but being able to specify image URL, including using custom fields, would make my life a lot easier!

Tailoring an image per customer sends my click through rates through the roof, but I currently have to export the HTML and re-import with custom fields.

  • Michael

It would be great if you had more control over the header – e.g. what if you don’t want the ‘No images click here’ text – or you want to add social icons in the header etc.

  • Oliver

Hi. They look nice. I miss a preview function like the templates in the gallery. I would like to see the whole template before choosing.

And how can it be used as templates? Especially for clients. Sorry. I didn’t get that. I don’t understand why they are not visible in the template gallery. Everything used to be so clear and easy. First time I don’t get it.

  • Filipe Nunes

    Sounds good !

I would like to have the option of custom width. 600px wide is too small. According to the new measures and screen resolutions, According to the new measures and resolutions from 800px width screens will be the ideal or the possibility of having other major measures. It’s possible with css to put the same responsive to smaller formats.

  • Samantha

Great stuff from Campaign Monitor as always!

I would love to see the ability to change background colours on individual content blocks.

Keep up the good work guys!

  • Aaron

I notice that the download template option from the ‘cog’ on the clients template gallery no longer exists for these new wysiwyg templates.

Sometimes I need to tweak the functionality or add some custom HTML / CSS.

Is this a feature that can be added back?

  • Lyle S

I like what you guys are doing with the templates. I just want to let you know that there is a MASSIVE PROBLEM that you need to address. You guys really messed up and you need to fix it asap. This mistake is going to cost your clients time, money and perhaps embarrassment if they don’t catch the issue and send a campaign.

Our communications person has to start from scratch today on an email we’ve been drafting all week and that’s thanks to your update. The problem occurred when she tried to change the template to a newer version that I had made. With the new update, by default, the templates that are shown are the recent campaigns. She clicked one of the previous campaigns with the new template. The problem is, instead of updating the template (which is the standard behaviour when you change templates), it fully overwrote our week of work with the content from the old campaign. No warning message, no description of what will happen. Completely unacceptable. Now she has to frantically rebuild our email so that we can send it out on schedule.

I understand this behaviour when you are first creating a campaign. It makes sense as there is no new content. It’s basically replacing the duplicate campaign workflow. That’s fine. The BIG FAIL is that changing the template after a campaign has be created and worked on DELETES EVERYTHING with NO WARNING.

    Steps to recreate the problem.
    1) Create new campaign
    2) Select template recent campaign
    3) Edit content -> preview -> define recipients -> should be back at snapshot
    4) Select change template
    5) Select a recent campaign template
    6) Observe that all of your changes are gone

  • Bertrand

    Hi guys,

Awesome ! Thank you for your great upgrade.

Would be still more amazing if we could preview the template : a) scrolling down with the mouse or b) click to preview and double click to choose the one we love. Because now, it is impossible to preview a template without creating a new campaign… Could be especially useful when we do not know yet the one we’ll pick.

  • David Greiner

Thanks for the great feedback everyone.

@Lyle, first off our apologies for what would have been a super frustrating experience. We’re actually working on a change to this flow right now to make it much clearer (and to give you a choice) if there is ever a chance any content will be overwritten. In this case, please feel free to reach out to our support team and we can actually reinstate the lost content (obviously no help right now).

Thanks so much for taking the time to share that with us, we’re on it and will have it rectified very soon.

  • Thomas

Still no “copy from Version A” for a split test. This update has been awful as I can see from other peoples comments. Why am I paying for a service where features are being taken away?

  • Mathew Patterson

    Hi Thomas,

You’re quite right, we’d promised that would be fixed a few days ago and we let you down there, my apologies on behalf of the whole team.

I’ve just spoken to the product team who are running final tests at the moment on our next update (which includes the copy from version A functionality). It will be released publicly in the next day or two.

We’re working hard on a variety of improvements you’ll see rolling out over time; as with many products a lot of the slow hard work is in getting the underlying system in a position to allow for faster, smoother updates down the line.

We always appreciate hearing from our customers even when we’ve not quite hit the mark. We’re always listening and learning.

  • Rickard

Reading all the comments above I feel like I’m in the wrong place. I thought CM was for designers who code html/css. These templates look beautiful but there is no way to pick a template, download and customize it?

That was the core difference between this app and all others. But reason comments in this thread it feels like there are no coders left?

  • James

Agree with @Rickard here… it seems the old template system has been left behind with no proper updates for ages… it’s all around this fancy system that just doesn’t work for our clients who want templates designed to their exact requirements fitting in with their brand.

  • David Greiner

@Rickard and @James, we hear you on this one and are hard at work on adding a pile more flexibility into the builder so you can easily customize these designs or start from scratch and create a template that perfectly matches a client’s brand. We are also making additional improvements to the older editor when you import your own custom templates.

If you have 2 mins, I’d love to hear more from you about the sort of additional design customization you need in the builder so you can easily get a template on brand for yourself or your clients. You can catch me on email at dave@ any time, or just leave a comment below.

  • Grant

Hey – why is there no Forward to a link under ‘social sharing’ in Canvas?

  • Ros Hodgekiss

Hi Grant, when you select “Forward” in the editor, you should see a link to the “Forward to a Friend” page in the footer of your email campaigns. At present, you can only forward campaigns, not custom links. Let us know if you have any questions about this!

  • Wei

Hi, Is there any documentation/support available for creating Template compatible with the new Editor?

  • Ros Hodgekiss

HI Wei, it isn’t possible to create templates for this editor as yet. At a later date this may change, so watch this space!

  • Thomas

Still no copy from Version A. Nearly two weeks now. Not happy at all.

  • David Greiner

Hi Thomas – just confirming that as we mentioned in an email to you last week, this update did go up, but perhaps the different design might have been hard to spot. Your version A will be the first draft in “Recent emails”, but we’ll be shipping another change in the next couple of days to add an even clearer “Version A” label to avoid any confusion. Cheers.

  • Thomas

Rant over, features back. Thanks so much guys!

  • Brandt Ashley

Background colour… can it be changed, or a pattern inserted?

  • Ros Hodgekiss

Hi Brandt, you can most certainly change the background colors on the email templates, but you can’t use image backgrounds just yet. Does this answer your question?

  • Jocelyn Kearl

I’m glad there are more options. However, the option to export the template to make additional changes is still not part of this new roll-out. It would be really helpful to have a basic starting point as the templates are obviously somewhat complicated with all of the great features. Is there anywhere to get as basic HTML file that can be modified like there was in the old template builder?

  • Veken Gueyikian

Having the ability to export the template so that we could add the “RSS to Email” tags to the templates would be great. I’ve done it with the Canvas builder here (https://www.campaignmonitor.co… and it worked well but would love to do more withe these.

  • Ros Hodgekiss

Hi Jocelyn and Veken, you can download a free template (download link on the last step), if you’d prefer to use the old builder/add RSS code. That said, I’ll add your vote for more customizable templates; we have some pretty amazing updates coming up, so we hope we can serve you better here!

  • alexplus

Please, let us change more of the hard coded settings in the gallery templates. Like adding an “expert”-dialouge, where you can change all colours, font-family and font-size values?

There are many great templates, but I can’t use any of them as long as I’m not able to change the visual style to our coporate design.

Also, downloading a template and manually change a particular html element, then reuploading, would be great. Downloading with the correct template language already added, would be great, too.

  • Ros Hodgekiss

Hi alexplus, making improvements such as fine-tuned control of font-sizes is top of mind for us right now. Having a more integrated templates experience too is a fantastic suggestion, so by all means, please keep sending in the feedback – hopefully we’ll have some great news for you in the not-so-distant future! Thank you so much – we have your details, so will reach out when we have some news for you here.

  • Felix

I’m with alexplus on this one. We really need to have more finetuned controls for the new email builder. i found the page https://www.campaignmonitor.com/email-templates/b/ where you can create canvas templates and download them as HTML. I got pretty exited and changed everything to match our customers design just to find out, that when i upload them the old email builder is being used.

Is there an ETA for font-size changing with canvas? This is is needed the most.

    thanks in advance

  • Phil

As mentioned by several others, I’d also be really keen to see the new editor rolled out to allow us to code our own templates. It seems illogical to have a separate editing experience for customised templates

  • Ashley

PLEASE give us all of the social icons available out there, with multiple options for each one!

  • Ben

Hi, I never use your canvas editor but, for the first time, I tried it with a customer. Sincerely, I don’t understand how can we build a great email with it. We can’t customize anything ! Impossible to make a table, impossible to size an image (yes, I understand this is responsive, but why don’t permit %), to add specific style (for specific device), etc.
But, to be honest, my customer loved it :) It’s clearly for (very) newbies.

  • Nathan Lee

It looks as though this ability to download as a html file been taken away. Is this right, and will it be made available again in the future?

  • Balthazar Simões

Hi Nathan! No, you can still download the HTML & CSS files when using the public builder: http://cm.d.pr/cVcB/5ObVuFQN.
