Email Client Usage vs Device Tracking

I am trying to figure out the correlation between Email Client Usage and device usage, specifically mobile usage. For example, stats for iPhone users are clearly mobile users. And MacMail are desktop users.

But what about Gmail, or all of the versions of Outlook?

I started out assuming that all Outlook users were desktop users, but then I realized that Outlook 2010 offers some sort of mobile version. It seems that you could be looking at Gmail on either and we don't have a way to differentiate.

I have several clients trying asses their mobile traffic and I'm want to give them accurate data.

Thanks,
Emily

Hi there Emily, you're right - there isn't necessarily a clear mapping between email client usage and device usage. The technical reason for this is that email clients like Gmail share the same user agent string, regardless of what platform/device they're on. We're constantly trying to identify as many unique email client/device combinations as possible, however it isn't always possible to be entirely accurate.

Keep in mind that for now, iOS Mail, Android Mail (default) and BlackBerry Mail absolutely dominate mobile email client market share, so you could come up with a fairly close figure by combining the results from these 3 clients.

Sorry for not being able to paint a clearer picture, but we can assure you that we're just as hungry for accurate email client usage stats as you! :D

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Follow up question: If I see stats for Outlook, Is it safe to assume they are non-mobile?

Hi Emily, yes, that's a safe assumption :)
