I've got a client who wants to use Salesforce's built in capabilities to send email campaigns. I'm pretty sure tracking, customization, etc. is pretty poor within Salesforce, and I want to steer her toward using Campaign Monitor. Does anyone have any ammunition/concrete reasons why you'd want to steer clear of using Salesforce for email marketing?
For all the reasons you've stated but more importantly, sending limits.
You can send mass email to a maximum of 1000 external email addresses per day. The maximum number of external addresses you can include in a single mass email depends on the Edition of Salesforce you are using:
Professional - 250
Enterprise Edition - 500
Unlimited Edition - 1000
That of course is using the built in mass email tool - not an integrated third party. We use SF extensively but choose to use CM for email marketing for all the reasons you've stated.
