Adding Returning Subscribers

I am able to add virgin subscribers just fine.  However, when I go to add a previous subscriber (one that subscribed at one time but is no longer a subscriber) the API seems to think that the subscriber was successfully added; but, it appears that is not the case.  Note that I have removed the previous subscriber from the suppression list so that is not the problem.  With the subscriber removed from both the active subscriber list and the suppression list I don't see why he wouldn't be treated as a new virgin subscriber.  There must be something.  Does anyone know what it is?  BTW, I am using the Ruby api library.  Thanks for any input.

Hey Doug,

If the subscriber is actually on the list, but in an unsubscribed state, you should use 'AddandResubscribe' to put them back to active subscriber.

As far as I know he's not on anything.  That's what I am saying.  He is not on the subscriber list (in either a subscribed or unsubscribed state) nor is he on the suppression list.  I don't know why Campaign Monitor would regard him as being anything other than a new virgin subscriber.  That's my question.  Does he exist somewhere else in the Campaign Monitor database that I don't know about?  Thanks.

You mentioned "one that subscribed at one time but is no longer a subscriber" - normally that would put the person into an 'unsubscribed' state on your list.

A new virgin subscriber would be one that has never subscribed to the list before.

I totally understand that.  However, can I not make a previous subscriber into a virgin subscriber by removing them entirely from the list so that they don't appear on the list in either a 'subscribe' or 'unsubscribe' state and making sure that they are not on the suppression list?

Put differently, what do I need to do to remove all traces of a subscriber from Campaign Monitor so that if someone with that email address ever tries to subscribe again they will be treated exactly as if they were a virgin subscriber?  Thanks.
