I would love to be able to geocode clients ip addresses and visualise this on google maps/virtual earth. Does CM even collect the ip address?
Hey Dave, we do store the IP address, and this is something we've considered supporting before. Thanks for the request, I've just added your vote for this kind of report.
This is a great idea. You could use a custom field and collect the users IP in your own form in a hidden field.. As a matter of fact I think I might just start doing this!!
Here is a cool related link..
This is a typical IP geocode service that would return a lat long for an IP.
I'm thinking of starting to add postcodes as custom fields and geocode that instead. The reason being people arent too worried about giving up their postcode and IP addresses are really quite unreliable. With IP addresses it depends where the ISP terminates i.e. Im in Brisbane but I would be geocoded as Melbourne (NetSpace).
Just have to find a cheap geocode service and check I can grab the postcode via the API.
Been playing with the SilverLight Map Control for Virtual Earth and its pretty awesome, visualizing data is fun.
