MailBuild Feature Request Thread

I've recently been playing around with MailBuild a little. What a user friendly and powerful app!

But you know me, always thinking about more features I'd like... ;)

Customize Everything
And I do mean everything ;) Really, though:

- My Color Scheme
Something like the Color scheme settings in Basecamp would be cool. Better yet, My Stylesheet would be perfect :)

- Customize copy and labels
I realize someone could mess things up if they got this wrong, but I know international or branded versions would be welcome.

- Lastly, graphics
The silk icons and buttons and everything looks good and neutral, but it might not go with all designs.

Defaults for new clients
More than anything, I'd love to be able to set default templates that are automatically assigned when a new client is added. Default pricing model would be handy too.

Signup form for new customers
This must've been requested several times, too.. But letting companies sign up automatically would be brilliant.

That's it for now, but I'm sure I'll add more..

Thanks for the great thread idea Stig, and for the thoughtful suggestions. Right off the bat I can confirm we've got some more customization options planned for the near future. This will include using your very own URL. The idea of setting defaults for new accounts is also something we hear a lot of.

We encourage anyone with other ideas to chime in, we're definitely listening. Also, what are your thoughts on us creating a dedicated forum to MailBuild? We see quite a few MB posts appearing here, and I'm wondering if it's time to give it a dedicated forum of its own.

Stig Stig, 8 years ago

That's great news, Dave! I think the more (relevant) aspects of MailBuild you let people customize, the easier it'll be to sell.

And a MailBuild forum would make a lot of sense - and make things less confusing to those not entirely familiar with your products.

I would certainly add a vote to getting a MB forum - there are already a few questions ion this board relating to it. It may not require its own dedicated forum, simply another subforum.

Yes, that would be nice, because I've got suggestions that specifically apply to MB.

Dave Dave, 8 years ago

Cool guys, thanks. We'll work on putting together a new dedicated forum just for MailBuild over at the MailBuild site. We've got a few thinsg we'd like to roll out first, but it's on the list ;) In the mean time, feel free to use this thread for any suggestions/feedback.

Here is a suggestion specifically for MailBuild that I posted elsewhere.

In MailBuild, I'd like to set conditions on each story.  For instance, some of my clients' customers have certain custom fields selected for what brands of products they have bought.  For instance, if they bought a Nikon camera, they don't need to see a story about the new Canon Lens.  Or maybe if they have clicked a Nikon link in a previous email, they can see the Nikon story.

So, conditional stories based on custom fields or on criteria from clicks from previous email campaigns.

I'd like to add a toggle button that means a campaign will show up (or not) when I add the script to view it on my clients site. For example if we send a database cleaning email I'd rather that didn't show up as an sent campaign.
Also as I've already said (somewhere else) I far prefer the reporting style on Campaign Monitor to MailBuild, it's not easy to explain to a client why it's different and imho not as good.

dvsDave, 8 years ago

actually look at the link that is generated.  It is simply a Javascript link to a list of links which links to the sent email campaigns.  You can extract only the links that you want.

I can't find the button in MailBuild, but this is already in place for Campaign Monitor accounts.

Here's where it is:
Reports > View all Campaigns > then select or deselect the emails you wish to be visible in the client reports or in the display archives.

ahh, gotcha.  I thought you wanted to exclude a generated version of the previous email campaign, not the reports for the campaign.

Yes, that would be good.

It's my 100th post on the forums (yay!), so I decided to celebrate by asking for an update on the following:
Dedicated MailBuild forums
Customize Everything
Defaults for new clients
Signup form for new customers

:)

Hey stig, only 100? ;-) Wish you posted more often, as you are often very helpfull.

In regards to:
"Signup form for new customers"
Yes please, even if it doesn't give them full rights to everything (i.e. only import lists with less than 5 contacts).

Absolutely - and thanks, I've been trying to ease my way back in the forums, these last days :)

Thanks Matt, it's good to be back :) MailBuild is a truly terrific product, and I'm looking forward to seeing how you'll make it increasingly rebrandable.

Hi there - I've got a few suggestions too (apologies if they've been posted already):

- An inline style converter (or 'adder'), similar to the one provided by Campaign Monitor. As I'm unable to style client-inserted links (affects Gmail).

- An option to specify a default image for the <$imagesrc$> tag.
Maybe something like <$imagesrc default='images/myimage.gif'$>

maybe i've missed something, but is there a way for clients to prepay themselves?

Hey, it's not currently possible - only you as the designer have access to credits right now. Any client you are paying for will use up any credits in your account. I will add your vote for client prepaying functionality to our list - thanks for your feedback.

Two huge suggestions.  Or at least least huge to me.  (Actually one or the other would work..)

One big thing that keeps coming up for me when dealing with Mailbuild:

1) I would really like the option of having *multiple repeating regions*.  Not only would this be a huge help to myself, but I think it would also allow a number of my clients to move over to Mailbuild simply becuase their current newsletters are too complex to work in Mailbuild.

2)  The option to put a tag around a section and name it <optional></optional>  For example, my client may have a Mailbuild template that has one section for repeating regions.  And then the option for 3 other sections that are styled differently but each has a <title><description> and <img>.

So, if one month they only have two stories but not three, Mailbuild can see that there is nothing inputted in the tags between the <optional></optional> tags and simply ignores the code inside of them.

Does this make sense or do I sound like I am rambling?

Hey Jason,

Welcome to the forums and thanks for the great suggestions. You'll be pleased to know that we agree with you 100% on the first point. This is a shortcoming we're well aware of and plan on resolving.

As for the second request, this should already work. You can add any number of floating title and description tags to your template, and unless your client edits them, they will not be included in the final email. Basically, all elements are optional by default.

Stig Stig, 8 years ago

I never really got an update, did I? :)

Anyways, here goes another one:

Billing heaven
I'd love to be able to do all MB related billing through MB, not just for sent campaigns. MB billing for this and PayPal for that just seems kind of wrong..

I realize there's probably some legal stuff that would complicate this, but it might help if you linked everything to services in MB.

Example:
I've uploaded a new template for a customer. To unlock it, she has to pay whatever price I've set.

You know better than anyone what kinds of things your customers are charging for, but templates has to be the most important. I guess, also, account setup, importing subscribers, generating subscribe form code, etc.

One of the biggest drawbacks to all of the rebranded MailBuild sites I see is the lack of automated sign-ups and payment processes. If this functionality were provided via the API it would seriously encourage me to get cracking with my rebranded site.

Also a vote for multiple repeating regions.

Another thing I'd like is the ability to specify on a per-client basis the functions available in the WYSIWYG editor - my clients can't live without tables for tabular data.

What about the option for them to upload attachments?

Ooh - another idea!

I read the latest case-study (thanks by the way) which mentioned the idea of a "partner program", where existing clients with decent subscription lists are offered the option to send campaigns at cost price if they put a link in their email template.

Why not build this functionality into MailBuild?

37Signals have an affiliate section whereby the account holder can choose to display a small banner in the footer of their site (Basecamp etc). If a user signs up for a 37Signals product after clicking your link, a credit is applied to your account.

So if my MailBuild clients could choose to display my affiliate link in the footer of their emails and they got x number of free credits every time someone signed up (via the afforementioned sign-up api), that would make us all RICH! ;)

Some great suggestions in there as always Wayde. We hear you on the multiple repeaters and more editing controls, they are both areas we plan on improving on.

The automated sign up side of things is a little more complex as we would also need to introduce some kind of approval process to ensure we avoid any kid of abuse. I can definitely see how beneficial it would be when you're going to whole way with a re-branded site, and it's certainly something we'll be considering.

Cheers for the great feedback and glad to hear you're finding the case studies useful.
