spacer gifs?

I recently had a design coded for me and the developer littered the html with spacer gifs.

Do you think these are necessarry in html emails?  I have found that just using <td width="n"> suffices (where n is an arbitary number) and also removes the need for blank alt tags.

Any thoughts...

Thanks

Spacer gifs are something that are not really needed any more, even in HTML emails. Consistent support for css widths and html width attributes is good enough not to require them.

I thought so.  I have just gone over the work that he has done and removed all of them and added width and height declarations to the cells that needed them.

Looks alot better and degrades better with images turned off.
