Whitespace caused from <a name>

Building an image only email and trying to get some <a name> links working from the top contents to lower in the email. What seems to be happening though is that a single pixel gap is appearing in the email layout where the <a name> appears in the code.

There are no spaces in the code, so a little unsure as to why this would happen.
Any clues?

Thanks in advance,
Paul.

Not sure if the description makes sense.

Below is an image of what is happening:

The horizontal white line is where the <a name> is added in the code.
Happening all the way down the email.

All fixed.

Changed my approach.
Added an <id> to the images and linked to that rather than a separate <a name>.
No more gaps!
