How can I add a background-image that repeats Y but not X?

Hello,
so I've been following this article: http://www.campaignmonitor.com/blog/post/3170/adding-background-images-to-your-email-in-two-simple-steps/ and easily got that part described to work.

However in Outlook (tested in 07 & express) the table background= tag does not take priority thus the body background-image, background-repeat: repeat-y no-repeat; takes care of the rest.

My background is 600px wide and I would like to add this in behind the centered (600px wide) table holding my content.

Currently outlook starts applying the background image at the left most point of the view then repeats both axis across the screen… I only want the y axis to repeat and also center the background image (background-position: center top; does not work).

Any idea, is this even possible?

Thanks,
Jannis
