Out of 6100 subscribers only 3740 have gone through with the others apparently "duplicates, supressed or updated". Is this normal? Because there are no duplicates as they were removed in the spreadsheet. What else would they remove and is there any way to get them back?

If your list has no duplicates, then the other two reasons would be the cause - suppressed or updated. Updated just means that address was already on the list, so the existing record was updated.
Suppressed means the address was on your suppression list, which contains all the addresses previously bounced, unsubscribed or deleted. See http://help.campaignmonitor.com/topic.aspx?t=99 for more.
If that's the case, then you'd need to know whether there are people on your suppression list who unsubscribed and should be re-added, or whether you've got people on the suppression list accidentally (perhaps by deleting them when practising importing, for example).
