Bilingual newsletter

Greetings

A client has come to me with a request this month: he wants his newsletter to be bilingual.

The problem that I have is that his subscriber aren't divided by language. So I will have to put a "English / Français" button at the top so the subscriber can see the content in his langage.

Do you guys have any suggestion on how to proceed with that kind of request? Should I first let the susbscriber select a language in a custom field? Should I divided by subscriber in two list and do TWO newsletter (one per language)? Should I do a single one with two HTML saved as a "webversion" of the newsletter for both language?

I'm loooost! :D

No replies... Since I had the client with me for the whole afternoon, I decided on doing that:

1. Modify the template so there is a "red" warning at the top, saying the "English version is at the bottom of the email, Please set up your langage preference (link to preferences center)".

So my content is actually almost duplicated for the first campaign. I will simply remove the "warning" message on the second campaign, while keeping a note for the preferences center for english users... I will also create another template in English (so title and menu are displayed correctly).
2. Set up a Language custom field (Français & English)
3. Segments my list in two: "English" and "Français / is not provided".

I hope the subscribers think of changing the setting themselves!

Thanks, I had time to sort this issue out! ^_^

Hi Nickolas, we're really sorry we didn't get to assist you with this earlier, however the plan you've outlined above looks pretty sound to us. In the future if other customers enquire about this, I'll be sure to point them to this thread.

You may want to also take a look at this campaign for inspiration - good luck!

Thanks a lot Ros for the example.

This example is particular. The newsletter in itself isn't really multilingual: it simply links back to pages the website (press release section), showing content in another design...

I thought about doing this as well, but the client's newsletter launching plans were a little too hasty for me to have the time to accurately export a HTML English version of the newsletter... And I didn't want to send TWO campaign (one in French, one in English)... it's just way too harassing for subscribers!

I my humble opinion, having a "English version here" link is nice, but takes away the point of having content in the newsletter itself (since it is REQUIRED that the user click the link too see the content while the "in newsletter content" let the subscriber read it right away)... hence the "segmented list" option. I prefer the "least work for subscribers" approach : the less they need to do to get informations, the better it is.

In the future, most likely in june, the client will launch another newsletter, I'll do some adjustment to make sure language selection is clear as day! ^_^

I'll keep you guys posted!

Hi Nicholas.. A very inspiring thing. Bilingual newsletter is something very new and surely very good... It is easy to create multilingual website... Hope to see that happen soon....

Indeed, multilingual website are common things... they even detect your language based on your browser's settings! This isn't something I can imagine right now for email marketing.

Actually... there could be a way to do it using content images, using custom fields:

image-text-[language-custom-field, fallback=FR].jpg

Sadly, subscriber would NEED to make it so that image are displayed to see the content since images are disabled by default on many email clients.

But as far as text in itself goes, it would requires dynamic stuff, such as conditional statement/content, based on custom fields... perhaps in the future! :D

Greetings!

The first email newsletter was sent a few weeks ago, successfully.
http://email.kokstrategie.ca/t/r-AA15E0EBCF6C7E52

Up to now though, the response rate for the language settings has been too low in my opinion. Only about 1% of the subscriber changed their settings to English, based on what I can see from my Segmented list (with a Language field). That also reminds me that access to Preferences Center isn't tracked. There was a topic about it iirc.

So the first launch was a success, we are already looking at solutions for the second, coming in summer.

I'm looking at solution to add "English / Français" buttons at the top, that would do a "one-click settings" (is that possible?) stuff... OR link the the HTML version of the email...  but I'm having a problem with building a newsletter that would link to another newsletter that doesn't exist yet!

How can I more efficiently change my "Language N/A"-English subscribers into English subcribers? I don't want to simply send two version of the content on the same email, they might not see that two languages are there...

My goal is simple: provide my subscribers with relevant content in their language, in their inbox.

I'm having a real headache trying to figure out the best solution. Any suggestions?

Hi Nicko, I'm loving your campaign there! Perhaps it's worth sending a campaign to a 'Language N/A' segment, asking them explicitly to select their language preference? You can either link through to your preference center, or feature prominent "English / Français" buttons, so you can view the click results for each button later and update your subscriber's custom fields accordingly. I'd say the latter approach would be the most successful (as it requires the least clicking).

Let us know if you have any questions about this - have a great weekend ahead!

Hmm, is that a new way to build segments? That's a pretty nice addition and it could really be useful.

I have one little issue with this though:

Should a "N/A" subscriber click the English version, will he be able to access the content in English? I would need a landing page containing the English version of the email...
But I'd much rather have them redirected to the English HTML Newsletter instead (and have more precise stats). I'd like the solution to be kept in CM, not being externalized into the client's website (it has a weird infrastructure I never really liked; adding a landing page might be a pain).

But I won't be able to link the an HTML version of a campaign not yet sent, since I have no way of knowing it's URL ID. Would it be possible to assign an ID upon draft creation so it can be known and used into other simultaneously sent newsletter (ie. French and English version of a newsletter)? That would help with the planning!

In any case, thanks for the tips on segment based on clicks... Might really help!

I am looking at my reports right now, and something occurred to me...

I already have two segments for my list: "English" and "Français / NA".
If I am to add those who clicked link in English (such as a "More info" in the English portion of my first campaign), I would need to build a whole new segments!

The reason for that is that I cannot add a "OR" rule based on a new condition into my segments. Let me illustrate:

I have a segment where the condition is "Language equals to English".
But now I want to ADD to that segment a "OR" condition where "Link clicked equals 'url_to_english_page'", along with other 'OR' condition on the same field, such as "Link clicked equals 'another_url_to_another_english_page'"...

I did a little screenshot to further illustrate my point.
http://kokstrategie.ca/image/cm-segment-more-options.jpg
Notice the red "OR"...

The reason this options would be useful is obvious when selecting recipients for a campaign: I wouldn't have duplicate recipients. since a subscriber could be in both segments.
I assume you guys parse the thing so it isn't sent twice to the same batch of recipients, yet this option would make it "neat-ier"...

Edit: Geez, why do I have to post "wall of text" everytime... :D

Hi Nicko, haha, I like your 'walls of text', as you say :) Bear with me, there are a few questions here:

But I'd much rather have them redirected to the English HTML Newsletter instead (and have more precise stats). I'd like the solution to be kept in CM

Create an English version of the campaign, get the 'share' URL (ie. http://createsend.com/xxxyyy) and link to that. If you send the English version to yourself only, you should be given the share link, which you can then add to the Francais version.

Once you've done this, simply duplicate the sent English campaign, then send to your English speaking subscribers :)

The reason for that is that I cannot add a "OR" rule based on a new condition into my segments.

This is great feedback and we've had a couple of requests for this over time. Adding an OR condition of this kind can't be done at present, I'm sorry to say, however I've added your vote for it internally. In the interim, you will have to create two segments - one for 'English', one for clicks. You're correct - we make sure that duplicate recipients are removed at send time, so you won't be in danger of sending too many emails by using this method. Agree that including the OR would be much neater, though - thank you :D

Oh!

So if I understood right, a duplicated campaign keeps the same URL ID?
Therefore, I could:
1. Send to myself both FR & EN campaigns;
2. Grab the share links;
3. Duplicate both FR & EN campaigns and add links to the two campaigns in both languages (they need to cross-reference);
4. Send...
5. Profit!

Correct?

Sorry, by URL ID, do you mean, share URL? Once your send the initial EN/FR campaigns, the respective share URLs provided will persist forever, however click activity won't be recorded on these campaigns (as these share URLs don't contain subscriber-centric information). The duplicated campaigns (for sending later) will have their own unique share URLs.

Clicks will only be recorded via the later EN/FR campaigns you send out to your subscribers. The process you describe above will work, as long as you're happy to only have clicks/opens recorded for your later EN/FR campaigns only.

And yes, profit is awesome :)

Would using my own subscriber details and the webversion I received gives me click and opens stats?
I know if I use the sharing version, it won't. But can I use the version I received? (not sure it works that way)...

Edit: I tested from a previous newsletter.

The only stats I can manage to get from a previously sent newsletter's webversion link is a +1 to the "Clicked links" for this particular subscriber (from whom I took the Webversion link)... Which is not "Nothing". :D

I would've thought that there would also be an opening (since a link in this newsletter was clicked) but nope.

Hi there NickoLabs, we're very glad to announce that dynamic content is finally available in your accounts. Using our new dynamic content tags and custom fields in your lists, it's now possible to add conditional content to your campaigns - including text, images, or even more dynamic content!

This should really help with adding multilingual content - for example, you can add content blocks for French speakers, Italian speakers, etc. While you've likely already got a grip on how it all works, we've also got a new, comprehensive guide that explains the concepts, great applications for dynamic content and the language itself.

A huge thanks to everyone here for being so patient with us; we really hope that this update helps you send less, yet send more relevant newsletters. Naturally, we're also very happy to answer any outstanding questions you may have about dynamic content, so feel free to get in touch with our team, or post in the forums if we can help out in any way :)

Thanks a ton Ros for the heads up! I was all hyped when I got the newsletter this month on Dynamic Content. I'll check out the option and see if I can get a client this functionnality implemented.

Keep up the good work and the upgrade coming!
