Understanding segment logic

We've been using CM for a particular monthly newsletter since August.

That's 10 newsletters.  I'm feeling like if they haven't opened a single newsletter in all that time we should unsubscribe them, would save us some mailing costs, and would stop mailing to folks who are apparently not interested in what we have to say. We would probably send them a "last chance" message first tho in the next newsletter and they could always resubscribe later.

To get a handle on how many folks this would be I've created a segment as follows:

Did not open August Newsletter
AND
Did not open September Newsletter
AND
Did not open October Newsletter
AND
Did not open November Newsletter
ETC

Here's my question:

If an email address was added to the list in October (so they were never sent the August and September Newsletters) and then never opened a newsletter would they be included in this segment or not?

My guess is that that would not be included in the segment, that "Did not open" really means "Were sent and did not open".

Is this understanding correct?

PS: I know that not CM is not able to tell who opened with 100% reliability.

Hi phripley, happy to help with this one:

If an email address was added to the list in October (so they were never sent the August and September Newsletters) and then never opened a newsletter would they be included in this segment or not?

Your guess is correct - the 'Did not open' means 'Were sent and did not open'. You can test this by manually creating a subscriber - as they haven't been sent a campaign yet, they won't be added to a segment like this. Good luck!
