I have a list of subscribers with a sign up form on my online store. At our store, we are licensed by a motorcycle manufacturer to sell products with their logo, and as such, we sell to consumers (riders and enthusiasts) as well as to independently owned motorcycle dealers.
Our pricing, specials, and everything pretty much is very different for regular consumers vs. dealerships, and campaigns are separate. Right now i capture (using a custom field) if they're a consumer or dealer and then use a segment so I can send campaigns to them separately.
I have an autoresponder to thank people for signing up and offer them a discount. I'd like to send a different autoresponder for dealers than I do to consumers. Any way to do this? I didn't see the option.
The only way I can see to do it is to have two completely separate mailing lists going as opposed to two segments of one list. The issue with that is that then I would need two subscribe forms online on my site and it's just not as user friendly for people browsing on our site.
Another thought I had: can we use some sort of if/then statement while personalizing the autoresponder? If i could make even just one sentence, coupon code, or pargagraph different on the same autoresponder based on if they're a dealer or consumer, that would work too.
Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks in advance!
HI brne4x4, welcome to the forums and thank you for your detailed post. It isn't possible at present to send out autoresponders based on segments/custom fields, I'm sorry to say. This has been a fairly popular request from our customers and I'm more than happy to add your vote for this internally.
In this situation, I'd use two different lists and use our API or use a bit of clever scripting to add subscribers to either the 'consumer' or 'dealer' list, based on a radio button/drop-down list selection when they subscribe. If you, or someone you know is a confident coder, this shouldn't take loads of time to setup.
I'm also keen on your suggestion of adding conditional logic and will gladly add your vote for this, too. Naturally, I'll keep you posted if either logic or autoresponders based on custom fields is added to our service in the future. Thanks for your great feedback here!
Thanks for the info. I'll check out the API. I probably wont be able to get it working, but I'm open to the challenge. I do all of our coding etc in here, but I'm self taught based on just pulling code apart and learning how to read it (started just by building simple web pages in ms frontpage and then just reading the code side of it to know how things actually worked).

Can I add my vote to this too.
We have used your API to integrate Campaign Monitor with our booking system (holidays etc.) and it is difficult for us to use the Auto-responders with out conditional logic of some description.
e.g. only send an email if the last booking someone made was "confirmed" and not if it is "cancelled".
The number of variables means that separate lists is not a practical solution for us.

I agree, this function should be a priority. I also have a question that about my subscribe form. I'm plugging the form in a survey tool and the data is being entered but not coming around to my list. I've had success with hosting the form in the past, but this time I'm failing.
Hi blake.roller, welcome to the forums! Mind me asking, which survey tool are you using? There's a good chance that this tool is disabling the form, however it's hard to say without testing it out.
If you could, please contact our support team with a link to the form you have hosted - we'll be able to say with certainty whether it's the form that's falling over, or the survey app that's preventing it from working.
I just setup my first auto responder, and I'd love to have the ability to do segmented responses too, so add me to the "me too" list on this one.
All I would need is a choice in the initial setup stage to choose a segment from the list instead of the entire list. That would be enough for what I'm after, but allowing multiple segments ( i.e. checkboxes ) could also be handy.

I'd also like to add a vote for this. It would really make the autoresponders very powerful. As it is, we're using clunky work-arounds.

I would also like to add a +1 to this. We would love to use auto-responders to save us time and do things we're not currently able to do. Without being able to use segments we can't use auto-responders, which is a shame as it makes a really useful part of the Campaign Monitor software redundant to us.

+1 for this, been looking for a solution and I think this is the eventual best option. going to try and use multiple lists for now but looking forward to segment autoresponders!

This feature really is a "must have" and it will put you more in the league of the big players in marketing automation.
A related function that is common (even AWeber does this) is the ability to have multiple autoresponders for a single list and conditionally remove a person from Autoresponder "A" when they get put on Autoresponder "B".
We need this ability in order to let people "self-select" into different interest areas. While segmenting allows us to manually broadcast to these different interest areas, the name of the game today is automation.
Say I offer a new Webinar on a special topic. I'd like my list members who register for that Webinar to be both segmented AND put on a new Autoresponder. Thus, I maintain ONE list (no need to opt-in again) and can automatically send the targeted emails only to those who expressed an interest in the topic. The key word is "automation" and it's what makes systems like yours worthwhile.
I'm surprised that I can't do this with Campaign Monitor.
I agree with everyone here, autoresponders for segments is a MUST so please add my vote.
In the mean time, can anyone suggest ways in which we can get around this? Is it a matter of creating a separate list for each "segment" and manually importing the people that meet that criteria? Are there any other (easier) ways?
I would hate to see so many potential customers get turned away because of this one feature.
Hi Copysmith, thanks for providing a good amount of context to your request here - we've recently been discussing autoresponders based on segments, so while we don't have any concrete plans as yet, this certainly hasn't fallen off the radar. Admittedly we haven't give segments a lot of love while working on other big improvements like the template editor etc, but hopefully we'll have the opportunity to refocus in the coming months. I'll let you know if I get any more information on its release - thanks again for your help here.

At present, sending individual campaigns to segments is the way to go - it's probably best that you avoid importing separate lists, especially if on monthly pricing. I appreciate your enthusiasm for a better solution, so have happily added your feature request for this :)
