Could someone help with a small query I have?
What is Campaign Monitor's equivalent to MailChimp's static segments feature?
i.e. segmenting a list based on a separate list of known email addresses.
Or if CM has a different / better approach, I'd love to hear it
Hi Huw, I'm not entirely sure how MailChimp handles segments, but I assume you mean being able to 'wash', or remove certain email addresses from a list, prior to send? We used to create 'exclusion lists' at my old agency for this.
At present, we don't have a way of creating a segment based on an uploaded list, however you can use custom fields and segments to ensure that certain email addresses are excluded.
For example, you can:
- Create a custom field, 'Exclude', in your list
- Add a 'Exclude' column to your list of email addresses and set all values in this column to 'Yes'
- Import the list, then send to segment where 'Exclude' = ''
If you want to be doubly careful, you can also create a custom field for 'Campaign' so you know exactly which campaign the email addresses are being excluded from :)
Alternately, you can export your existing list, 'wash it' against your exclusion list, then re-import into a new list, in the app. The downside of this is that ongoing subscriber information will be lost.
That said, I'll note your interest in supporting exclusion lists and let you know if it's something we add in the future. Thanks, Huw! Let me know how you go :)
This is less to do with exclusion lists, more to do with inclusion lists.
Segmenting via an imported list, or building this list over time, without using the small number of custom fields you have would be very useful.
Thanks for your response though
Thanks Huw, I'll update the request I added internally for you. Congrats on getting your campaign out, as well - I saw someone tweeting about it earlier today :D
