In an e-blast today i noticed that we had another round of AOL "General Mail Block"... almost 300 of them. Campaign monitor is set to do all authentication... but?? Why is this and what can we do to make sure our AOL customers get the messages they've subscribed to?
Hey there Brian, we're really sorry you've seen this uptick in bounces from AOL, it's a pretty rotten situation. Recently, we've been getting the "ESMTP not accepting connection" response from AOL for bounced emails, regardless of how authentication is setup.
There has been an on and off problem with AOL for several months now and has been reported by a couple of deliverability blogs like Word to the Wise.
So, it would seem that AOL is having internal problems which are impacting email senders worldwide, I'm afraid. You can try to resend to those recipients, but it may still be hit or miss. On our end, we will continue to contact AOL regarding these bounces and monitor the situation closely. We already send from a range of IP addresses to limit the likelihood of issues like this one.
