What's the coolest thing you've seen in an HTML email recently?

I've been asked to 'push the envelope' as far as email technology. What is the coolest thing y'all seen in an HTML email recently? Can be anything: a neat design, code trick, interactivity. Doesn't need universal support (cough, cough, Outlook, cough).

I'm looking for ideas to test. I'm talking beyond responsive email layouts, web fonts, or animated GIFs.

I second CSS3 animation! I haven't actually seen it used in a live newsletter yet, but I mucked around with some really rudimentary stuff recently here which I made using Animate.css.

There's a lot to think about but some really nice stuff could be done as progressive enhancement, like fading in elements. That page of tests works in iOS mail, that is as far as I have tested so far!

That is very cool! I found this template with background animation.

Also, a company called Movable Ink has the ability to make emails into containers for live content, for example social media updates or a live count of people attending an event.

Extremely clever use of "unloaded image" boxes in this playstation promotional email: http://imgur.com/a/aBBGF

@Eli Oh yeah I've seen a few of these before. I believe there are some featured on Campaign Monitor, too. Very neat trick!

WOW! I spent a day looking for this exact thing for "Special Ends in: clock"

Where does this come from? I love that you can change the web address to date and time you want it to expire.
