I was wondering if there is any way to track my subscribers who haven't opened a campaign for a while. We send out about 2,000 emails a month and usually get about 900 opens, so it could save us a lot of money if we could find out who hasn't opened any of our emails. I've tried working with "segments", but that doesn't really get the info I want. Any ideas?
Right now, the simplest way is to use segments. I'm not sure what you've tried, but we would suggest creating a segment like:
Where subscriber did not open <campaign name>
subscriber did not open <campaign name 2>
subscriber did not open <campaign name 3>
and so on. That will end up with a list of people who have not opened any of (for example) the 5 most recent campaigns. Keep in mind that we can't always measure an open, so you might be catching some people who have actually read your campaigns. See our article about open rates for more on that.
In the future we might look at ways of making this even simpler, if it looks like something more people would be interested in. So to anyone else reading, leave a comment below if you would consider this highly valuable, and we'll keep it in mind.
Thanks for tip. I did try that already, but I was hoping there was a better way to get the information I wanted. I was hoping for a way to maybe give a date range or something like that so I could see who hasn't opened one of our email for lets say something like a year. When I use segments it just keeps adding subscribers up from each campiagn. Not really giving me who hasn't opened in email in a while, but all the subscribers who at one point haven't opened an email. Does that make sense?
Question. When I do create a segment is there anyway to export that information? Right now it looks like I can just view the subscribers, but there's now way to get the information so I can do something with it.
I hear what you're saying about it probably being a bad idea to remove those subscribers. Maybe I should have said "target" them. I understand that what I want is kind of specific, but just want to check and see if there was some way to get it on the site. I'm still a big fan of Campaign Monitor.
Thanks for the explanation. The segment as I describe does actually give you a list of people who have not opened any of the listed campaigns. You just need to make sure you have "AND" rules, not "OR" rules, and then it will work.
Segments aren't exportable at the moment, although that's something we would also look at as a possibility for the future.
Ah... I didn't know you could change the "or" to "and". That's pretty much exactly what I wanted. It would be nice to export that info though :)
Thanks.... and sorry to waste your time.
I was super excited play with segments now that I know I can get what I want, but I can't seem to log in to my account. As a matter of fact I can't even get to the login page. I can see the public site, but that's it. Is this you guys or me?
Sorry about that, we had a minor outage there for a while, but we were straight onto it and it is all back up now. We're investigating to see what happened and what we can do to avoid the occurring again.
Not being able to export segments is quite a problem. I want to be able to get a list of people with a birthday in any month. Created the custom field and the segment and want to download this so I can send them an SMS text message and voucher. Is the only way to export the whole list and then sort in Excel?
Sorry Philten, but right now I'm afraid that's the only option. We do plan on adding exporting support to segments soon, but have a couple of others we'd like to roll out first.
Segmenting in Excel isn't that bad an option to me (for exporting segments, that is). If you need to do basically the same thing regularly, I'd concider writing an Excel macro.
Thought I'd dig this one up out of the archives to let everyone know that you can now export your segments straight to Excel or a tab delimited text file. We hope it comes in handy for you all.
