Outlook not respecting container table width

I have built a custom, two-column, fluid template using the method described here: https://www.campaignmonitor.com/blog/post/4240/creating-a-centred-responsive-design-without-media-queries
Content that is only 1 column wide I have inserted into a new row of the "container" table.
I've also added a conditional style:
<!--[if gte mso 9]>
    <style type="text/css">
    table[class=container] {width: 600px!important;}
<![endif]--> just in case.
Everything seems fine apart from Outlook 2007 which is not adhering to the "container" table's width:600px instruction, everything is stretching to fit the screen.
In my mind I think that it might be because Outlook is reading the container table as having two cells in the first row then the next one has only one cell which is 600px wide, so it's pushing what it thinks is the second cell across but how would I fix that with conditionals?
Also, perhaps this isn't the problem. Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you.

Hi there shelmerdene, would you be able to share a link to your webversion? It could be that there's some content pushing out the width of the table, or alternately, widths on cells therein. I hope we get to the bottom of this!
