Possible way of tracking plain text opens?

Hi
I was wondering ithe following logic would partially get round the issue of not being able to track plain text opens? The logic is:

If recipient is plain text AND recipient clicks one or more links ADD one "open" to the opened emails count.

Ie. it would not count all plain text recipients but it would at least count those who clicked on one or more links.

Is this the stuff of a madman's dreams?! If not why not maybe one for the wish list?

Hi julian,

Thanks for the suggestion, but we deliberately avoid tracking link clicks in plain text emails because of the instantly suspicious look of tracking links in a plain text email. If an email claims to point a visitor to your site but clearly appears to go to a different site, it might appear to be a scam, and just look plain bad.

Unfortunately this means that plain text tracking isn't something we can support. Having said that, we do use your approach for HTML emails where images have been blocked. Even if images aren't loaded, we'll count an open when a link is clicked.

OK the non tracking of plain text links makes sense Dave.  I agree lengthy URLS with your code included would look suspicious!
What you say on HTML is good news and I hadn't realised that.

Ahhh... so there's no tracking of plain text opens, eh?  Would that explain why the same few people, in my reports, never seem to open their emails?  They're legit double opt-in subscribers, I'm not spamming them :)

Yes, it is quite possible that those people are using plain text, or that they are reading the email without images showing. See http://www.campaignmonitor.com/blog/archives/2007/01/all_about_email_open_rates.html for more on that.

What about using this idea combined with the TinyURL API or another url shortening service.  It may even be possible to set up a CNAME to make it look like those links are actually going to your site.

A mite complicated, true, but it would certainly make the stats a little bit more accurate.

Agree with shortening URLs
But instead of using TinyURL API, why not develop CM/MB to do this internally?

Good call guys, we've got some plans on the "using your own domain" front that should make this possible down the track. This will be packaged up with some other cool features we'll be announcing soon.

vince, 8 years ago

As usual, can't wait for all the new features.
Keeping me up at night. :-)
And please please release these for MB - our customers need more toys nowadays.

Is plain text link tracking still included in this month's upgrade plans?

Hi Quena,

Plain text link tracking is not included (I don't think it was ever promised though).
